Garden Notebook
There are several plants that are particularly fun when gardening with children. Impatiens bloom all summer and do well in shady spots. They come in colors from red and orange to hot pink and violet, even variegated! Touch a green seedpod, and the seeds come flying out at you—hence the nickname “poppers.” Lady’s mantle is a perennial with large leaves that hold drops of dew or rain on their surface. The droplets sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight. Nicknamed the diamond plant, it is perfect for planting in a fairy garden. Scented geraniums have pretty flowers, and they have scratch-and-sniff scents such as rose perfume, lemon, mint, chocolate, pine, and nutmeg.
